Why you should be watching Anime
”Why are you watching these stupid shows?”
“Anime are just for kids!”
“You should stop wasting your time and focus on the real world.”
If you’ve been an anime fan for a longer period of time, chances are you’ve heard at least a few of these sentences. Maybe you’ve even said them yourself to some friends. Anime are unique, to say the least, and if you’re new to this world it can be hard to understand their charm.
Let me tell you some reasons why you should be watching anime even if you haven’t been interested in them until now. Let’s see if I can change your mind.
They can be enjoyed by everyone
Do you want to take a guess at how many anime shows are out there today?
A lot. According to my research, the number already exceeds 10,000. Chances are that there are at least a few shows that you will like. There are numerous genres and many decades of anime out there that are just waiting for you to explore and enjoy them. And let me just tell those of you that are still skeptic one thing – trust me, there’s a show for everyone to change his or her life.
Anime are not just for kids. In fact, there are also not for one gender or one race. Anime are an art form that can be enjoyed from a really young age up until your retirement. There are shows for boys and there are shows for girls. There are shows that a punk teenager can enjoy and then there are shows that your mother can relate to.
Anime have a versatility that’s unique to them. If that isn’t amazing, I don’t know what else is.
Important life lessons
Speaking of different genres, there’s in fact something that most shows have in common. Anime strive to educate their viewers.
Yes, you’ve heard me right. Anime are not a waste of time, but they actually have something to say. I cannot count the number of shows that talk about important parts of life, such as moral issues or the importance of humanity. There are numerous shows that depict dystopian futuristic scenarios and the degeneration of modern society.
Most importantly, they talk about daily life. They show the importance of friendship and how even the dullness of everyday life can be an adventure. Most main characters are good role models. They tackle problems with a smile on their face and dedication in their hearts. Just lean back, follow them on their adventures and you’re bound to be inspired.
They help you understand Japan’s culture
First of all, let me answer the question almost everyone is asking me when I tell them I study in Japan: No, living here has nothing to do with living inside an anime.
Or does it?
I don’t want to say that watching anime has prepared me for my life here, but it would be a lie if I said that they didn’t at least give me an idea of how it’s going to be like. It’s not only the language that you get exposed to, but also parts of Japan’s culture. You can immerse yourself in the life of a common Japanese school boy or girl. Or you can watch shows that focus on specific parts of Japan’s culture, like national sports or certain traditions.
But why should this matter to you if you don’t plan on visiting or living in Japan? I agree, it might seem useless, but then again learning about a different culture is never useless. It gives you perspective and helps you evaluate your own background. If you come from a Western society, Japan might be the most unlike culture to get to know.
Last but not least, anime has one of the warmest and closest communities I have ever encountered. The interaction online is friendlier and more welcoming than I’m personally used to from other websites. But not only online, also in person you have the chance to meet amazing people if you’re interested in anime.
Let’s be honest, anime fans can be outsiders. I don’t mean to say it’s justified, it’s just that the world of anime is hard to understand if you’re not directly involved. That’s why anime fans support each other. Meeting someone that shares one’s hobby and that one can talk to about what moves him or her is just an amazing experience.
So don’t be afraid to come and join us – when it comes to anime you’re always welcomed with open arms.
There are so many other good reasons why you should be watching anime, these are just the most convincing ones in my opinion.
